Provence walking tour
The Dentelles de Montmirial, a rugged landscape of breathtaking views, surrounded by isolated villages concealed within a network of vineyards and woods, provides the back drop for this special walk: the food is exceptional, the accommodation charming and the scenery spectacular!
This magnificent itinerary takes you along well marked paths through spectacular countryside with endless views. It starts with the first night in the gorgeous walled city of Avignon. The following morning, you will be taken forty kilometres north to one of the less visited parts of Provence and a range of jagged mountains cloaked in oak and pine forests, which is circled by towns and villages, several clustered around the ruins of medieval castles.
With small villages concealed within a network of woods and vineyards and clearly marked gravel paths, passing through varied country of unrivalled beauty, , the Dentelles offer perfect walking conditions. It has a rich history, particularly the bustling agricultural town Vaison-La-Romaine, which was a thriving administrative centre in the Roman era, and is now known as the 'Pompei of France' because of its extensive excavations.
This is a Grade 4 walk (click here for details). The walks are from ten to sixteen kilometres per day. They are clearly marked and generally follow good unsealed country roads, although there are some small trails and some steeper climbs along the way. Orientation in some sections requires a bit more experience than some of the other walks. Overall, it is a wonderful itinerary for keen walkers.
The self-guided itineraries are rewalked and the notes updated each year.
Hidden Italy uses the best accommodation available. Accommodation is in excellent, family-run three-star hotels, which are themselves part of the history of the region, and is one of the highlights of the trip: on Day 1 you'll stay in a 4-star hotel in a restored 16th century palace in the pedestrian centre of Avignon; on Days 2 and 6 in a boutique hotel in the medieval town of Vaison; and in two charming family inns on both well known for their restaurants. All rooms have an en suite bathroom.
Generous breakfasts are included each day (you'll need them for your walks). With notice, the hotels wil be able to prepare a cut lunch for the walk. Dinners are not included in the standard tour, however, if you select the 'Dinners option' (which we recommend) this will include 3 course meals alla carte (ie free choice) in some of the finest restaurants in the area. The dinner option also means you'll have a guaranteed booking each night.
Support on the walk:
To guide you through this wonderful walk, you will receive: the Hidden Italy roadbook (an eighty-page A5 booklet that includes comprehensive daily walking notes accompanied by detailed maps, updated and revised each year); access to the exclusive Hidden Italy App to complement the roadbook (the App is downloadable to Apple and Android devices and features information about the routes: maps, GPS tracks, altimetric profiles, etc; GPS navigation on all the routes; an alert function if you stray off the track; and an emergency function); twenty-four-hour phone support from our Florence-based Operations Manager.
