Amalfi Coast itinerary

Day 1

Pick up in a private vehicle at a time that suits you and driven from Naples (airport/hotel/station), or from Salerno railway station, to Ravello, a beautiful village perched 350 metres above the port of Amalfi, celebrated for Wagner, its gardens and superb views over the Gulf of Salerno.

Day 2

Today you have two options.  The first, an easy walk, winds down stone paths to the coast and then wraps around to the town of Amalfi, leaving planty of time to explore this fascinating town which was one of the four Maritime Republics (along with Venice, Genoa and Pisa) that ruled the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages.  (3 kms, 2 hrs)  The second, for the energetic, is a longer walk option into the the extraordinary Valle delle Ferriere, which wraps through a national park, with towering cliffs, shaded chestnut forests, waterfalls and breathtaking views down over the coast. (11 kms, 5 hrs)

Day 3

Today's walk follows an ancient path that has linked the villages between for centuries, passing a monastery (recently converted into a 5-star hotel) before dropping down to a little hamlet sitting above the sea, where you'll stay the night. Below your hotel is a beautiful hidden port, with coloured fishing boats, a small shingle beach (favoured by Jackie Kennedy in the '60s) and a very pleasant bar. In the afternoon, you will also have time to visit the famous nearby Grotta Smeralda.  (9 kms, 3 hours)

conca

Day 4

Today you have two trails to choose from.  The first, more demanding walk, starts with a steep climb through villages and abandoned hamlets.  It then contours past churches with multi-coloured ceramic domes and panoramic views before descending into a spectacular fjord, with its clustered houses built on rock. The route then leads into a green valley before taking you down to your accommodation, a lovely family-run hotel with views across the gulf to Positano.  (8 kms, 4.5 hrs).  The second, less demanding, walk follows a lower trail that contours around the mountain, passing though the fjord before climbing up to your accommodation.  (7 kms, 3 hrs)

Day 5

It is not by chance that the locals have baptised this walk with the rather extravagant name of Via degli Dei, the Path of the God’s.  Despite the tourist hyperbole that has made this one of the most famous walks in the area, the views are extraordinary.  It is a steep climb up to the start of the path from Vettica Maggiore, but it is worth it, and from there it is all down hill to Positano.  (8 kms, 5 hours)

Day 6

After breakfast in your hotel, at a time that suits you, you will be taken by private vehicle back to the Naples or Salerno.

"We are happy to be able to tell friends that we went places and saw things that few tourists get to see and the views of the coast that we were privileged to experience were eye-popping. We feel we had the best of both worlds on this trip."
