Amalfi

This walking tour on the Amalfi Coast can be personalised to meet your interests and travel dates.

This magnificent walking tour of the Amalfi Coast takes you the length of the Amalfi Coast, starting at the romantic town of Ravello, perched high above the town of Amalfi, and finishing at the spectacular seaside town of Positano. You'll be met at Naples railway station at the beginning of the walk and taken to Ravello and then dropped back to Naples at the end of the walk.

The Amalfi Coast is an hour's drive south of Naples. Overlooking the celebrated Isle of Capri, it is one of the most spectacular parts of the Mediterranean, with mountains rising dramatically to almost 1500 metres above the aquamarine sea. The whitewashed houses of the villages and towns that are strung along the coast seem to have tumbled down the sheer mountainsides to the water's edge. It is an area of vibrant colours, lush vegetation and warm, boisterous people. It is also an area with an extraordinarily rich historical heritage, from the ancient Greeks to Imperial Rome; from the fortresses built along the coast against Saracen pirates during the darkest period of the Middle Ages and the wealth of the medieval trading empire of Amalfi, to the glamour of the ‘international jetset' who made the area famous in the 1950s and 60s.

The walks on this itinerary take you high above the worldly delights of the coastal towns following stone paths that have been used for centuries, passing through shaded forests, remote farming communities and ancient terraces, all with spectacular views over some of the most beautiful coastline on the Mediterranean before bringing you back down to the coast in the evening.

"This was our first trip of this kind and we went into it with high expectations, but with some apprehension. We are happy to say that it met and exceeded our expectations at every turn..... We are happy to be able to tell friends that we went places and saw things that few tourists get to see and the views of the coast that we were privileged to experience were eye-popping. We feel we had the best of both worlds on this trip. With time off the beaten path in the green quiet and beauty of the hillsides and time at some of Italy's best bustling resort towns, we consider this the trip of a lifetime. Thank you for all the planning and for making it easy."

How hard are the walks?

Grade 4 Walk - Good paths, orientation requires more experience, several walks longer than 15 kms, some long and steep climbs.

While the walks generally follow clearly marked, centuries old paths, there are a couple of sections, where you will have to have a good sense of orientation. The paths the walks follow run approximately 400 to 500 metres above sea level - so the beginning of each walk requires a long stepped climb to get to the start.

Day

Pick up from Naples railway station and transfer to Ravello, a beautiful village perched 350 metres above the port of Amalfi, celebrated for Wagner, its gardens and superb views over the Gulf of Salerno.

Day

The walk today climbs up to a neighbouring village before wrapping through a national park, with towering cliffs, shaded chestnut forests, waterfalls and extraordinary views down over the coast. On the way down to Amalfi you pass through a village that has a trattoria with a terrace overlooking the coast - perfect for a well-deserved lunch or afternoon tea, before descending down an ancient flight of stairs to Amalfi (with the option of a bus should you linger a little ong at lunch).
(14 kms, 6 hrs)

Day

Today's walk follows an ancient path that has linked the villages between for centuries, passing a monastery before dropping down to a little hamlet sitting above the sea, where you'll stay the night. Below your hotel is a beautiful hidden port, with coloured fishing boats, a small shingle beach and a very pleasant bar. In the afternoon, you will also have time to visit the famous nearby Grotta Smeralda.
(9 kms, 3 hours)

Day

After a steep climb through villages and abandoned hamlets, today's walk curls past churches with multi-coloured ceramic domes and panoramic views before descending into a spectacular fjord, with its clustered houses built on rock. The route then leads into a green valley before taking you down to your accommodation, a lovely hotel with views across the gulf to Positano.
(8 kms, 4 hrs)

Day

Today, as the finale for your visit, you follow a path that has the extravagant but entirely appropriate name of the Path of the Gods, which starts high above the coast then follows the contours of the mountains, seemingly suspended between the sea and the sky and offering magnificent views along the length of the coast, from Amalfi to the distant island of Capri, before descending to the more worldly charms of Positano, a picturesque resort town celebrated since its discovery in the 1950's by the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner and John Steinbeck.
(10 kms, 5 hrs)

Day

After breakfast in your hotel you will be taken by private vehicle back to the Naples railway station.

Capri Option

Day

In the morning you take a hydrofoil from the port of Positano to the legendary island of Capri; where you will be based for the next two nights. Capri is a microcosm of the Amalfi coast, a tiny island of dramatic contrasts. With over 800 species of plants, an extraordinary array of wild birds, and a rocky coast of isolated bays and beaches, it is a virtual Garden of Eden. It has an extraordinarily rich history dating from Roman times. The town of Capri, on the other hand, is pure southern Italy, crowded with elegant cafes and restaurants and designer shops. Dinner is included.

Day

The walk today takes you from Capri town to the remains of the villa from where Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire for the last ten years of his life, passing the famous ‘faraglioni', rock columns that soar out of the sea, along the way. It then continues to the cliffs from which the emperor was supposed to have flung his enemies. (7 kms, 3 hrs) Dinner is included.

Day

Hydrofoil to Sorrento and then a transfer by private vehicle to Naples station.
